Why become a participant

Trading electricity on the different market segments of the EPEX SPOT (formerly Belpex) market presents many advantages that can benefit all kinds of market actors. As a generator it allows you for instance to optimise the use of your generation facilities (“make or buy”), whereas as an industrial consumer it allows you to diversify your power supply strategy and engage in demand side management (“consumer or sell”). Trading on the EPEX SPOT market permits a supplier to hedge at minimum cost its short term volume risk while commodity traders will find it very easy to ship electricity cross-border without having to acquire the capacity first.

To summarise, trading on the EPEX SPOT market allows you:

  • to diversify your power supply strategy
  • to optimise the use of your generation facilities
  • to optimise, at minimum cost, your short term risk volume management
  • to trade on an anonymous basis
  • to eliminate your counterparty risk through the central clearing service associated to EPEX SPOT contracts
  • to trade at an efficient and transparent market price
  • to easily (no necessity to first acquire cross-border capacity on a capacity market) ship energy between Belgium and France or the Netherlands and this at the right market price (in case of congestion, the implicitly paid capacity equals the difference between the concerned power exchanges)
